Why Are You Still Shaving?

No man ever steps in the same river twice,
for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.

Suds-bearded father
sang “Barroom Champagne” before
a cigarette and Bible study. Every morning
routine, in days before

the straight razor’s guillotine snap
gave way to two, four, six-blade
skin softening strips. Aloe

was a bitch, but no match
for a sharp spade and a Phoenix
Saturday morning. Beautiful,

my own dad shaving granddad only days
from his passing. Sometimes, I shave
to clean, to not be who I am, and at times

to practice stepping
in that same river.

  1. That gave me the "hairs on the back of my neck" equivalent of a semi-chub.
